MERCEDES-BENZ OF THE WEEK
This week, we’re featuring Kristopher Summitt of the SF Bay Chapter. Here is the story of his beautiful classic in his own words:
"Here is my euro 1957 220S. Originally delivered in Madrid, Spain May 14, 1957 and still wearing its original color of DB334 light blue and Blue leather interior. My love for this vehicle started when I first saw it in 2013 after it arrived at our beloved mechanics shop. Ten years later I was able to purchase it and begin the somewhat daunting process of putting her back on the road after many decades of neglect. I am proud to say with the help of MBCA members and Jon Siggson at Mercedes-Benz Classic center I have been able to source everything needed to do the job and over the last three years have done most all of the work myself."
"I one by one went though all the systems in the car from cooling, fuel, brakes, electrical and so on. Renewing all rubber mounts and bushing, belt and hoses, cleaned rebuilt the Solex carburetors and fuel pump myself and adjusted everything. I removed and refinished the interior wood trim myself using tinted nitrocellulose lacquer in satin finish as originally done by Mercedes-Benz. Original leather interior I scrubbed and cleaned and rejuvenated using Leatherique products which restored as much color and suppleness as possible. Many hours of cleaning, polishing and detailing of the exterior restored a brilliant shine to the bright work and very old paintwork. Everything I have done has been sympathetic, retaining as much originality as possible making it present as well as it can. This has been a very rewarding experience with a great deal of learning in the process. I have owned several classic Mercedes over the years but none have quite brought the level of enjoyment that this 220S has. Thank you to all that have helped me along this journey bringing her back to the road."
Thank you for sharing your 220S with us, Kristopher!
